“Very well, you’re all dismissed from the academy – everyone in exception of Mr. Whitlock and Mr. Peak.”
Bella shot up from her seat. Jasper and Donald shared the same ill expression as they gathered the meaning behind this as well.
“It’s apparent that you need sometime. Perhaps some anger management would suffice?”
Her jaw dropped and the judge nodded.
“Two years suspension Ms. Gordon, then you may attend the academy and look into becoming an officer of the law. But judging by what I’ve seen. You and these men haven’t any business…”
“She was justified in her actions!” Bruce shouted from one of the seats behind her.
“These men tormented her! This… this right here is why women are afraid to come forth on anything relating to sexual harassment or rape! This is utterly ridiculous! She was the victim in all this! Yet you seek to punish her and make orders for her to arrange anger management meetings?”
So there it was Corrigan would do a measly three months in prison. The others him included were kicked off the academy. Jim Gordon shook his head and eyed the judge down with utter disgust.
“Watch yourself Mr. Wayne.”
“Bruce… it’s okay.” Bella said as she pivoted around facing him.
But deep down she was writhing in anger. All that hard work… for nothing. That was how she truly felt. Then on the other hand she was tired. Emotionally and physically… this case had been going on for a few weeks now and it just grew more and more tedious. And she truly felt as if the judge had it out for her all along. He seemed to have that same idealism that Bullock had. Though he didn’t say the exact words as Bullock. They were hinted at. But she felt a since of pride for having fought this anyhow. Even if it didn’t quite turn out the way she hoped. So yeah she got the raw end of the deal as well. But she got the bastard right where she wanted him. This way Corrigan could never use his position of authority to harass other women or worse…
“No… nothing about this is right!”
Bruce’s lip curled as Corrigan looked back with that cocky smirk of his. That was all it took.
“NO!” Bella hollered but it was too late.
Her fiancé had leaped over the platform dividing them and socked Corrigan in the face. The entire courtroom gasped out and a few women were screaming.
“ORDER! ORDER!” The judge announced as he slammed his hammer down.
The police pried Bruce off of Corrigan, cuffed him, and began reading his rights. Bella staggered back in disbelief and had a hand clamped over her mouth.
Bruce rose from the cot.
“You come here often Mr. Wayne?”
He shook his head but with a slight grin. One of the officers unlocked the cell he was in.
“You still got those handcuffs?” She seductively teased as the officer escorted Bruce out.
“I got it from here…” she said and grabbed ahold of his tie and led him on out of the station and straight to the Lamborghini.
“Didn’t we talk about this car…?”
She shrugged as she hopped into the driver’s seat. He sighed as he reluctantly got into the passenger’s side. He looked to his fiancé in wonder as she eventually pulled off into a more secluded area. She unfastened her seatbelt, along with his. She threw the billionaire completely off-guard as she crawled into his lap. The young woman grinded against him and her lips were latched onto his. Bruce’s hands ran up her thighs and traveled on up her dress. It wasn’t until he ran his hand along her sex he realized she wasn’t wearing any panties. He looked around the area before undoing his pants.
The moment she felt him enter, she arched back with a moan. He threw his head back against the seat and rocked her about him at a faster pace. She had him so riled up Bruce shamefully knew he wasn’t going to last much long. But he let out a breath of relief as he felt her release just as he did. Her arms wrapped around him and she softly laughed as he was still moving her about him. He smiled and kissed her once again.
“If this is your reaction – I need to get arrested more often.”
She couldn’t help herself. Bella always was drawn to his bad boy side and seeing the way he reacted in court and the way he dealt with Corrigan had her all hot and bothered. Most women would’ve been appalled by Bruce’s actions. She rolled off him and crawled back towards her side. She giggled as he looked to be pouting at her absence.
“Well what do you think?”
“It’s beautiful… But don’t you think it’s a bit much?”
He shook his head in disagreement as he looked around the cathedral.
“It’s our wedding day…” he said with a shrug.
“I know it’s just…’
“We don’t have that many guests…” she hinted as to the space.
He nodded looking to be in thought as he ran his fingers along one of the benches.
“Well we got Alfred and a few other guests of mine, your aunt and uncle, I figure your friends might attend as well.”
“Even at that it’s not near…” he put a finger to her lips.
“If we do this right then we only get married the one time. So I say we do it right – go all out. Who cares about the number of guests attending? We both agreed on immediate family and friends only. Otherwise we’d have over half of Gotham inching their way through those doors. Besides they say the wedding is more about the bride and you…” he wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his head along her shoulder.
“Deserve only the best… so that’s what you’re getting. That being said once I leave here you will go with Alfred and pick out whatever else you need. And don’t forget the dress.”
He chuckled on this.
“I’m sure you’ll do fine.”
“I don’t know the first thing about setting up a wedding Bruce.”
“Then you let me worry on that and you just worry about the dress and the other minor details.”
She drew back a breath but nodded.
“Do you want to talk about it?” He implied as to the case and everything else that was going on.
She shook her head no. He nodded in understanding.
“I’m sorry Bella…” he genuinely stated.
“The system… it’s all wrong…” he murmured.
“It’s just how these things go.”
“But it shouldn’t…”
“Somethings are out of our control.”
He sighed wishing there was something he could do. But she was right. Neither Bruce or Batman had any control over the situation. The CEO looked to the time and pecked her on the cheek.
“I better get back to the office. Alfred’s waiting for you outside once you’re ready.”
She nodded and straightened out his collar and tie out before he left. The young woman regarded the cathedral once more before she exited the building.
“Are you ready madam?”
“You mean Bella…”
“Precisely.” Alfred replied with a smile as he opened the door for her.
As Alfred drove Bella around town, she couldn’t help but to keep an eye out for the boy. She had ever since that day. She found herself praying that he were alright, him, and the orphans. But there was something about that boy in particular. He rather pulled at her heartstrings and she felt this odd connection with him. She wasn’t sure the reason behind it, but it was there and strong. Bruce wasn’t sure what to make of it all when she told him what had taken place. But he too agreed that something needed to be done about that orphanage.
Bella lowered the privacy window.
“Alfred I’d like to make a pit stop before heading back home.”
“And what about your dress?”
“It can wait.”
Alfred shook his head on this but did as she wished. He narrowed his eyes however as the directions she gave led him to the orphanage.
“I’ll be back…” she stated as she exited the limo.
She stood before the orphanage and her first thoughts were how dreary and gloomy it seemed. And that was just from the outside. Things seemed to get much worse once she entered the building. There wasn’t any bright colors like she’d expected and it didn’t have that friendly welcome vibe. No in fact she knew the heating must’ve been out as it was cold. She buttoned up her jacket and continued about.
“May I help you?” one of the caretakers questioned.
“I’m just here to visit the children, that’s all.”
“I take it your Mrs. Marsden. We were expecting you a couple days ago.”
“Oh good, she’s here!” Another woman said and took Bella by the arm as she escorted her to one of the rooms.
That room was filled with cots and children. Bella found it odd how eerily quiet the children were. They just sat there in their own little worlds.
“Is the heating out?” Bella questioned as the room was so cold she could see her own breath as well as the children’s.
“Yes mam, we’ve been meaning to get it fixed.”
Bella walked about the room and noticed how each child was wearing gloves and jackets in order to keep warm. Very holey ones at that… A few of the orphans were filthy and their hair was a mess. They had a single blanket and sheet on their cots. Bella made her way over to one little girl who was coughing so bad she could barely catch her breath between them. Bella smiled and got down to the girl’s level.
“What’s your name hun?”
“That’s a pretty name…”
The little girl smiled in return but started to cough yet again. Bella reached over and drew back a breath.
“This child has a temp… Has she been to the doctor?”
“Well no not yet… But aren’t you here to see that one?”
Bella narrowed her eyes and craned her head a certain direction. She swallowed back as there was a boy lying on a cot. When she made her way over her heart skipped a beat. The all too familiar boy had his arm and leg in a cast and his face was all beat up.
“Jason…” Bella said remembering what the other children referred to him as.
“He’s a trouble maker that one! Always running away and getting himself in situations like these. And he brings his little friends along. We haven’t a clue where they are. We only found him because of the GPD! Good thing you’re here. Maybe you can talk some sense in to the boy!”
The boy looked upon her wide eyed but once the woman wasn’t looking Bella put a finger to her lips and sent him a wink.
“We’ll need some privacy…” Bella specified with a touch of authority to her voice.
“Yes, why of course. I’ll be in the next room. Let me know if you need anything.”
“What are you doing here?” he snapped once the woman was out of the room.
“Funny, I was going to ask you the same. Thought you weren’t ever coming back here…” Bella said as she pulled up a chair and took a seat.
“Didn’t get much choice in the matter. You fucked that up for me!”
“You’re the one that thought it’d be a good idea to jump out of a moving car.”
“Yeah, well I didn’t need your help! You should’ve just let me handle those guys.”
“And what? End up another unmarked grave in Gotham?”
The boy reared back at this but flinched back in pain.
“Kind of dark lady, don’t you think?”
“How old are you again?”
“Why you wanna date?”
“Cute… A whole lot of talk for such a little man.”
He shrugged but pulled that face of agony again. Bella sighed on this.
“Can I get you something?”
“Yeah get lost…”
“Not happening… Try again.”
He shook his head and his entire face flushed over.
“What do you care?”
She swallowed back as there were the beginnings of tears in his eyes.
“You’re all the same. They’ll starve now because of you. You know that, right?”
“Who? Your friends?”
“Yeah who the fuck do you think I’m talking about. They’re still waiting for me!”
She nodded and looked to be in thought.
“Why don’t you tell me where this meeting place of yours is and I’ll see to it myself and make certain they are alright and have whatever they need.”
“I’m no rat!”
“You don’t believe me?”
“Why should I? Like I said you’re all the same. Knowing my luck you’ll call the police and have them hauled back over here.”
“I won’t do that. I just want to make certain they are okay. I give you my word.”
“Your word isn’t shit to me lady! I don’t even know you.”
“It wouldn’t hurt to try and let someone in. You’re not alone. I’m right here. I only want to help.”
The boy was shivering unmercifully and that only added to the pain he was already in. Bella took her jacket off and draped it over him.
Bella looked to the other orphans as well and rubbed her arms for warmth.
“I don’t want your stupid jacket!”
Bella reacted quickly as he nearly rolled out of the bed in attempts to knock it down. She braced him up against her and got him situated. The boy lost all composure and Bella found herself hugging him.
“I need to be out there so I can take care of them.”
A lump formed within the back of her throat.
“You need to rest… You let me worry on that.”
He drew back a breath and to her great surprise he was hugging her in return.
“You have to promise me you won’t make them come back here. That you’ll only make sure they’re okay.”
He nodded and took something out from his pocket.
“Go down 23rd make a left and look for that building.”
She regarded he picture he handed her.
“Will you be here when I come to visit again?”
He dropped his hold and sort of smiled.
“Maybe…” he said with a shrug.
“Well if not, then I suppose I’ll see you around. Just do me a favor and stay alive. In the meantime… Keep the jacket.”
“I mean it kid. I’ll help your friends in return you take care of yourself. Deal?”
He let out a long drawn out sigh.
Bella held out her hand and he shook it.
“I’ll see you around.”
She nodded and headed on out of the room. But walked right up to the nurse’s office. She knocked on the door.
“She’s not here at the moment… Can I be of assistance?”
“Yes actually, Misty needs something for her fever. Jason needs something for his pain and you need to give each child in there an extra blanket.
“But we haven’t any extra.”
Bella held up a hand stopping her for a moment.
“You mean to tell me you don’t have a heater and you haven’t any blankets for these children?”
“With all due respect Miss, we have over 60 children. That tends to get costly. It’s hard enough providing them with enough food and clothing.”
“You haven’t the means? Is that what you’re telling me?”
“Do you know who I am?”
“Why yes of course.”
“Oh I don’t believe you do. First of all my name isn’t Mrs. Marsden. It’s Bella Gordon. Secondly, it just so happens that my fiancé is Mr. Bruce Wayne.”
The woman gasped back and clamped a hand over her mouth.
“Tell me you don’t have the means again! When we both know he’s been donating to this orphanage and handsomely I might add for years!”
“Is there a problem?” One of the other women asked as she made her way over.
The other woman timidly answered.
“Jessica, this is Bella Gordon… the fiancé of Bruce Wayne.”
The woman’s jaw nearly hit the floor.
“My apologies! I hadn’t any idea. I just assumed.”
“Yeah I got that… Clearly we need to talk.”
Bella eyed the two women down as she dialed Bruce.
“What are you doing?”
“Like I said we need to talk. I want whoever’s in charge here and now.”
“I’m in charge.”
Bella got this haunting smile to her.
“Then I believe it’s safe to say you’re screwed.”
“Are you terribly busy?”
“Not at the moment no. Just had my last meeting of the day…”
“Think you can swing on by the orphanage.”
“Um sure… is something wrong?”
“Oh believe me this you need to see for yourself.”
“On my way then.”
Bella made her way through and checked on the water and everything else she could think of.
“You can’t do that!”
“The hell I can’t! Someone around here’s a little con. We’re about to find out who.”
“Then tell me where that money is going?! It sure as hell isn’t going to those children!”
Bella stomped back into the room where the children were. She gently took Misty by the arm and personally handed her off to the other woman.
“Take this child to a doctor and now!”
Jason sat up in his bed to see what the commotion was all about.
“And you…” she pointed to another employee.
“Go to the store and get each of these children a blanket and a space heater for the room.”
“You…” she pointed to the woman in charge.
“Give her the money to do so. I know you have it!”
“You can’t do this and I haven’t the money to…”
“You have one hour or I will be calling the commissioner and see what he has to say about this.”
“Why you little…”
“Little? What?” Bella challenged causing Jason to smile.
The woman stormed off bitterly and roughly grabbed the other woman by the arm as she exited the room. Jason observed quietly as Bella leaned against one of the windows looking troubled. But she said nothing as a few more minutes passed.
She jumped at first but sighed in relief seeing as how it was Bruce.
“That didn’t take you long…”
“Was testing out the Lamborghini…” he had that same dreadful appearance about him as he looked around.
“Isn’t this the orphanage you were talking about?”
He nodded looking grim.
“I haven’t been here in a few years…” he admitted with a glimpse of guilt in his eyes.
“Thinking what I am…?”
He nodded as he drew back a breath.
“Oh come the fuck on. You’re with that guy?!”
Bruce craned his head about and nodded towards Jason.
“That’s some mouth you got on you.”
“That’s him…” Bella whispered.
Bruce raised his brows.
“That’s the kid?”
She nodded in return. Bruce walked on over…
“So you’re Jason…”
Jason cut Bella a dirty look.
“You just had and go and tell someone, didn’t you?! I knew I couldn’t trust you! You really are like everyone else!”
The boy rolled off the cot and braced himself against one of the other children’s cots.
“… easy…” Bruce called out as the boy was in attempts to run off.
The older man blocked his way.
“You go out there like that and you’re going to end up getting yourself killed. I know that’s not what you want… Your friends… They need you.”
Bella found herself taken back. She saw what Bruce was doing and thought it to be rather ingenuous. Jason didn’t care about himself. No. It was his friends he concerned himself with the most. And that’s what Bruce was using in order to make the boy listen.
The boy’s eyes started to roll back and Bella gasped out as Bruce swiftly caught him. He laid the boy back down and checked his pulse. He nodded towards Bella letting her know the boy was alright.
“Look, I made the kid a promise. Think you got it from here?”
Bruce reared back in wonder.
“What kind of promise?”
“Bruce… I just need you to trust me. I sent two of the women out. One’s getting more blankets and a space heater. The other is taking one of the girls to the doctor. She was running a pretty high fever and had a nasty cough.”
“I got this… I suppose I’ll see you later tonight.”
Bella kissed his cheek and rushed on out.
“Hello?” Bella called out as she entered the building.
It looked to have been an old pool hall at one time or another.
“It’s okay… Jason sent me. I brought some food.”
She sat the bag of burgers and fries down and scanned the building thoroughly. But there wasn’t anyone around. Bella bent down and picked up a familiar doll. That’s when she took notice of the broken glass. Bella followed the trail of glass and the remains to what looked to be a beer mug. She took notice of the splattered blood up against the wall and along the remains of the glass itself, which told her someone had been hit and from her guessing – in the back of the head. She turned as she felt a draft and saw one of the boards to the windows had been removed. Bella made her way over and noticed there was more blood on the asphalt outside. The woman’s hand shook as she pinched the bridge of her nose. She was too late… Out of mere hope she waited around, but just as she figured no one showed. She grabbed the food and decided to take it back to the orphanage. Where Bruce was currently having the woman arrested for embezzlement. Bella waved upon her uncle as he was the one handling the case. He waved in return but went right back to what he was doing.
“Everything alright?” Bruce asked as he was signing some papers through the GPD.
She shook her head no and glanced towards the area Jason and the other children were.
“I couldn’t find them… I might be out late tonight.” She did her best to hint knowing she needed Batgirl on this one.
“Them?” he inquired.
She nodded and led him off to a corner of the orphanage.
“Jason’s friends… The area they were waiting… well let’s just say from the looks of things it’s now a crime scene.”
“Anyone there yet?” he implicit as to the police.
“No, not yet. All the more reason I need to get there first.”
He nodded in understanding.
“Where is this place?”
Bella handed him the picture.
“I’m going to hand this food and take off.”
“I’ll be there once I wrap things up here.”
“Looks like we’re in for a long night.”
He nodded in agreement and kissed her on the lips.
“Just be careful.”
Bella entered the room and started to handing out the food. She couldn’t help but to notice the massive grins on some of the children’s faces. They quickly devoured their food and a few of them thanked her profusely. She saved Jason’s for last. She handed his food over and his eyes locked with hers as if reading her.
“No…” he murmured and grew pale.
“I’m sorry… I haven’t any idea where they are. I haven’t given up.”
“THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!” he shouted and was shaking all over.
Bruce over heard this and decided to see what the fuss was all about.
“YOU STUPID BITCH!”
Bruce gritted his teeth and darted on over. He pointed upon the boy irately.
“ENOUGH! YOU WATCH THAT MOUTH OF YOURS! ESPECIALLY WHEN TALKING TO HER! SHE’S ONLY TRYING TO HELP!”
Bella gasped back as Bruce grabbed the boy by the collar of his shirt and forced him to his feet.
“Bruce…” she nervously called out as he took the boy to another room and slammed the door.
“Just us men now… so you can drop that little tough guy act. I get it… you’re mad and you feel you have something to prove. But you’re 7 years old! No 7 year old…”
“What do you know?” Jason interrupted.
“Everyone knows your parents are dead just like mine! Only looks like I got the raw end of the deal. My parents weren’t born with silver spoons up their asses – like yours.”
“You think my parents were born rich? My parents started from nothing and built a business empire, all towards creating a better city. I do what I can to honor their memory and legacy.”
Jason staggered back somewhat and leaned against the wall. Bruce took notice of the blood oozing out from the boys shirt.
“Hey…” he called out in a softer and more concerned tone.
The boy looked down to see what Bruce was looking at. He lifted his shirt to see that he’d ripped through the stiches. His eyes rolled back and Bruce quickly braced the boy against him.
“I think you need to go back to the hospital…”
The boy shook his head in attempts to argue this, but he was just too weak.
Batgirl let out an exasperated sigh as she thoroughly scanned the pool hall once again. She took a sample of the DNA from the crime scene and took a few pictures. This had her thinking back to her friend Rose and how she did the same when she came up missing as well. She also thought back to the newspaper not long after with that article about the masked woman. The resemblance was uncanny and from what the media was picking up. This was a new vigilante – only she had a much darker way of dealing with things. Bella swore within time the pictures of this vigilante grew darker each time. And this person’s hair was once blond but it was beginning to fade and it was nearly white now. And like that of Batman and Batgirl at first. This masked woman had her enemies only it seemed much worse. Something about how she dealt with the public was only creating more. There wasn’t anyone that had anything good to say about this mystery woman. Neither Batman nor Batgirl had had a run in with her yet. They’d only heard the stories. Then again, when it comes to Gotham there’s a lot of ground to cover. Part of Bella prayed it was Rose, but only in the sense of her being alive and well. But unlike that of Batman this one hadn’t any issues in taking a life. And it wasn’t just the resemblance that had Bella curious. It was her methods of attack as well. The way she’s described… that earth shattering scream. It was so much like that of what she witnessed when they were dealing with Marcus Crane.
She heard that familiar flapping of a cape and turned. He nodded as he made his way over.
“Nothing yet… Just taking a few samples.”
Batman began his own investigation as well.
“How is he?”
“They had to sedate him…”
‘Jesus…” Bella murmured.
“He’s going to be alright. Just needs some time to recover.”
“If he’ll even allow that.”
Batman cleared his throat as something else came to mind.
“He was asking for you…”
She cut Batman a look of sheer astonishment.
“I think he’s rather taken back by you. Not that he’d ever admit it.”
“He’s got a lot on his shoulders – having to become an adult before his time. Something the two of you seem to have in common.”
