I do not own Twilight, Marvel, or X-Men. This is AU with a few events from the X-Men movies and Magneto/X-Men comics.
Three months later…
“Can I help you?”
“Um yeah… I’m looking for the man that lives here.”
The rather attractive blonde cut the young woman an offbeat look.
“And why would you be looking for him?”
Bella pinched the bridge of her nose.
“You’re his wife, aren’t you?” She murmured looking downright miserable.
“Maybe…What’s it to you?” The woman taunted in return.
Bella shook her head with sheer annoyance.
“Look, is he here or not. It’s kind of important.”
“Let her in, Morgan.”
“It’s Morgana!” The woman scoffed as she stepped aside, allowing her in.
He ignored this and adjusted the cufflinks to his shirt then nodded upon Bella.
“And what brings you here?” He asked with full on curiosity.
“Can we talk?”
He nodded and motioned towards his office. He closed the door behind her and Bella paced the area. The man poured himself a drink and offered her one as well.
“That wouldn’t be such a great idea at the moment.”
The man smiled on this.
“And why would that be? Are you afraid of the aftermath?” He questioned with a smirk.
“It’s a little too late for that…”
He narrowed his eyes on this.
“Hmmm… You know I didn’t particularly care for the part where I awoke and you were gone, without so much as a goodbye or explanation.” But as he said this… the man realized he wasn’t really one to talk. He’d lost count on how many times he’d pulled that very thing himself. It felt odd being on the receiving end of it.
“Oh believe me, buddy. You’ll be eating those words soon enough.”
“Such a funny expression… Come to think of it, you have a very peculiar way of communicating.”
“So I’ve been told.”
“I like it… it’s refreshing.” He said with a shrug.
“Yeah well, if I were you… I’d have me one more of those and have yourself a seat.”
“If I didn’t know any better I say you’re about to tell me you’re pregnant.”
Bella raised her brows and merely waited. The man had himself a good laugh.
“Ah now, you almost had me…” He poured himself another drink and gazed upon her.
“So what is it you want? Money?!”
The man took a seat at his desk then retrieved a checkbook from one of the drawers.
Her jaw dropped.
“You’re fucking kidding me, right?”
“Do I look like I’m joking to you?”
“Nope, not even a little.” She said with hint of laughter.
“Wow… just WOW! And what is it you expect me to do with that money exactly? Rid of it? Just so you don’t have to deal with the situation?!”
The man froze and observed her mannerisms more closely. He was about to say something along the lines of how does she know it’s his. But there was something in her eyes that had him refraining.
“You really are with child, aren’t you?”
She nodded as he handed the check over. Bella looked to the check then ripped it in half.
“On second thought… We’ll be just fine. I came here thinking that maybe, just maybe… You’d want a part in their life, considering you’re the father and all. I thought I was doing the right thing by giving you that GOD given right. But considering what a DICK you’re turning out to be, I can see that I was HIGHLY mistaken! So… Erik, is it?” He nodded as she was looking to the ripped check.
“Well Erik, you have yourself a good life. No need to worry about child support or anything of the such. I got this. You just keep doing whatever it is you do. Back to the little blonde number you got waiting for you outside the door. That’s right, I know you’re there…,” She called as she could see the woman’s shadow from the space below the door.
Erik raised his brows as they could hear the woman’s heels clanking against the ceramic floor.
“Enjoy your playboy life…” Bella hissed.
He looked on in utter disbelief as she stormed on out of his office. It was taking a bit for it to all to sink in. He looked to the check and thought back to everything she said and frowned. Erik came to his feet and started after her. The other woman however stopped him.
“And who was that?”
Erik didn’t respond and jerked out of her hold. He darted on out the door and saw the young woman entering a cab. Just as the driver was to take off, he put a stop to it and rushed on over. He opened the door and Bella jumped, whilst sending him a baffled look.
“Did you… I mean…”
“Come back inside and we’ll discuss this.”
“Tried that already, remember? Your reaction was all I needed. Good day, Erik.”
“I thought you…,” the man didn’t understand his own behavior. He didn’t typically care what others thought of him. But there was something about this woman. And whatever it was, he wasn’t so sure he liked the way she made him feel.
“You thought what?!” She spat.
“That you were one of ‘those’.”
“Those? As in what? A gold digger?!”
“I suppose so, yes…”
Bella had a good laugh at this.
“Getting knocked up wasn’t exactly on my list of priorities. In fact, this couldn’t have happened at a worse time. I can barely…,” she trailed off realizing how that was about to sound.
And that was the last thing she wanted, or needed for that matter. Truth of the matter? Bella was having a hell of a time making ends meet. She’d been sent home the last few days, due to her severe morning sickness. And she couldn’t keep anything down. But she wasn’t about to give him the satisfaction.
Erik knocked on the driver’s window and paid the fare. He offered Bella a hand afterward.
“Come along now… We’ve much to discuss.”
She closed her eyes and drew back the deepest of breaths.
He nodded and helped her out of the cab. The nervous driver hurried off and Erik escorted Bella back inside.
“Didn’t I see you on TV the other day? ” He questioned as he seated her on the couch.
She sent him an odd glance.
“At that rally…?”
“Hm. Interesting. So you stand behind mutant rights?”
“Yes. But I don’t see what that has to do with our current situation.”
The other woman went to comment but Erik put a finger to his lips then sent her a hinting wink. The woman frowned and Erik smiled. He gathered Bella a glass of water.
“And how long have you been attending these rallies?”
“I don’t know… A couple months or so. Look, can we get back to the original topic? I got some things to take care of in town.
“And that would be?”
“None of your business, really.”
“You’ve got a bit of mouth on you. ” The woman put out there and Bella sighed.
“You haven’t a clue… and my patience is wearing thin.”
“What is it you’re looking for exactly?”
“I’m sorry… Who are you again?”
Morgana went to answer but Erik was quick to interrupt.
“Your services were adequate, you may leave now.”
“I believe I’ve made myself clear. Now as you can see I’m in the middle of something…”
The woman came to her feet and was throwing a bit of a fit as she gathered her belongings.
“I sure hope you used protection with that one…” Bella uttered once she left.
“Ever wish that someone was barren?” He taunted with a smirk.
“Really?!” Bella hissed.
“Come now… I’m sure you and I both agree when I say that one shouldn’t reproduce. And with all due respect, you have me pegged wrong on that one.”
“Oh…?” Bella said with full on sarcasm.
“She was in high hopes, nothing more.”
“But you mentioned her services…”
He smiled on this.
“Now does that necessarily imply that we had sex?”
“It wouldn’t matter either way.”
He raised his brows on this and handed the water over.
He nodded and sat in the recliner caddy corner to her.
“I have a rule about those sorts of things and I don’t typically bring women here.”
“Well someone’s full of shit.”
This had him rearing back.
“How else do you think I managed to find you?”
Erik gave a mere nod but looked to be in thought. She made the first. But he wasn’t about to boost her ego on that one.
“So that was about… two, three months ago?”
He cleared his throat.
“Talk about rotten luck… It being your first time and all.”
Her entire face flushed over.
“You mean… you knew?!”
“Not until the morning after… It was a bit obvious once I pieced it all together.”
“Was I that bad?”
He chuckled on this.
“‘Quite the contrary… Why do you believe it took me a while to comprehend what had taken place?”
“Well we both did an awesome job on the whole contraception part!”
“That we did.”
“Ugh…” she groaned and sank into the couch.
“Hm. So how old are you?”
“I seriously doubt you want to know all that. Look, let’s just handle this maturely as possible. Just two adults raising a kid together… No strings, no drama, I’m asking this for the child’s sake. If you wish to be a part of their life, that is. I’m not here to milk you for every penny. I’m here to give you a choice. So we got drunk, had ourselves a one nightstand, and now here we are. No sense in making the child pay for it.”
“And what is it you presume I will do?”
“Honestly? I haven’t a clue. Things got way out of hand. So let’s decide what we’re going to do and move on from there.”
“Are you working?”
He had a good laugh at this. Erik waved his hands about the manor. But he didn’t come from money. No. This came from taking advantage of his ‘gift’. He’d grown tired of living in damn near poverty and decided on taking matters into his own hands.
“What does all this tell you?”
“That you’re overcompensating but we both know that to not be true.”
“Well thank you!”
Once Bella realized what she did, she sort of laughed.
“…fuck…” he heard her mutter under her breath.
“Is something the matter?”
“Look, can we cut to the chase already? Do you want in this baby’s life, or not. A simple yes or no will suffice. If it’s no… then I will walk right on out that door and you’ll never see or hear from me again.”
“Now that would be a shame.”
“And why’s that.”
“I rather enjoy your company. You’re different from most…”
“I’d say women but that’s a given already. I mean humans, in general.”
She had this bewildered look about her.
He nodded and raised his hand about. Bella froze as three quarters lifted off the coffee table and into the air. Erik pushed his hand forward and the coins drifted her direction. She brought her index finger to the one closest to her. Erik smiled as she tried moving it but it wouldn’t budge.
“How…?” She went on to ask and the coin finally moved.
The young woman looked on in sheer amazement as the coins coasted back his direction. They landed within the palm of his hand and he placed them into his pocket.
“So that was you… with the taxi earlier. The driver was complaining about the car not moving.”
Erik nodded and closely observed her reaction.
“…amazing…” He heard her whisper as if in awe.
“So you’re one of them?”
“One amongst the others you stand behind. That little speech you gave. It was quite impressive, Isabelle.”
Bella’s face flushed over a bit and he sent her a wink.
“It’s Bella actually. I haven’t been called Isabelle in a long time.”
“Hm. Well if you wouldn’t mind, I prefer Isabelle. It seems to suit you better.” He replied with a shrug.
“So Isabelle Swan…” He murmured looking to be in thought.
“Now back to my question. How old are you, Miss. Swan?”
“Funny. You didn’t care to ask back at the bar.”
“We were a bit preoccupied…”
Erik would’ve choked if he had been drinking something.
“I do believe it is my turn to ask if you are joking and for my sake… I hope you are.”
“Nope. I’m 18 and all kinds of knocked up. At least I don’t have to worry about finishing high school!”
Erik pulled a face on this.
“Sorry bad pun…”
“To say the least… I knew you looked young, but 18.” He recoiled once again.
“Yeah you can stop doing that now. Legal age, buddy.”
“There you go again…”
“Just the way you talk. It’s so peculiar.”
“I have a feeling my age and the way I talk would be the least of your concerns, if you know the truth behind everything.”
“How intriguing… So you’re saying there’s more?”
“You haven’t the faintest.”
“Well then… As to our ‘situation’ there will be plenty of time in which to get to know one another. It should make it easier as well, considering you will be staying with me.”
“Um, excuse me?”
“You are with child not just any child but mine and you’ve to keep in mind what I am… There’s a good chance that the child will carry the gene as well. You need all the protection you can get. Both of you, that is.”
“You can’t be serious. You expect me just to drop everything and move right on in?”
“Tell me Isabelle, what is it you’d be giving up exactly? All I’m asking is that you move in, so I can properly care for you both. Once the child is born we can make other arrangements… But in the meantime, I don’t see why you shouldn’t stay here. Unless, there’s a boyfriend or something along those lines in which you’ve failed to mention.”
“If that were the case don’t you think I’d be on the Maury Povich show by now?”
She pinched the bridge of her nose.
“Right… 1974. Hasn’t happened yet.” He heard her mutter.
“Is that his name? Maury?!” He mocked with a chuckle.
“I don’t have a boyfriend.”
“Very well. How about friends? Family?”
“Jesus, what’s with the twenty questions?!”
“Don’t you think these are things we should take into consideration? We’re about to raise a child…”
She sighed and shook her head before answering.
“No… It’s just me. What about you? I mean… do you have a wife or perhaps other children I should know about?”
“No wife… But I have a son and daughter.”
“Why does that not surprise me? Let me guess? Same situation?”
“Unfortunately…” He admitted.
“But in my defense I wasn’t aware of this until recently. Twins… about your age. Unlike you… their mother didn’t give me the option of knowing. I found out through recent chain of events.”
“Try the end of the world… Or that’s what it would’ve been if it wasn’t for me and others alike preventing such.”
“Is that so?”
“Surely, you have some recollection of this… After all it was a worldwide scare.”
“When did this take place again?”
“I suppose it was about a year or so ago.”
“Well I wasn’t exactly around then…”
“Weren’t around? As in…?”
“Hm. Well that certainly explains things.”
“Yes. Yes indeed.”
“It’s not that I don’t appreciate the offer, but I barely know you. Moving in… that seems a bit much. It would be different if we were in a relationship of sorts. But I think we know where we stand.”
He nodded in full agreement.
“That we do. As to why you’d be free to come and go as you please. If you wish to date, that is of your business. It is not my desire to police you around, but merely help as much as I can. Especially, considering my mannerisms beforehand, I do apologize for what took place back in that office. I must admit that you caught me off-guard. I meant nothing by it.”
“Now Erik… don’t lie. We know damn well what you were hinting at. You said so yourself, as to why I must decline your offer.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. But the offer still stands for however long you need. Might I offer you a ride home, at least?”
She’d this skeptical presence about her but truth of the matter; if she called for another cab that would be her dinner tonight.
“Yes, actually thank you.” She grimaced as she looked to the time.
“And if you wouldn’t mind giving me a ride to work?”
“But of course.”
She nodded and grabbed her purse as they headed on out. Once she spotted the black 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450SL convertible, she laughed.
“I’d say you remind me of someone… but you’re nowhere near as frigid.”
Erik reared back on this.
She gave a simple nod as he opened the door for her.
Erik frowned once he pulled up to the apartment complex.
“This… this is where you live?”
She nodded and exited the car. The mutant shook his head in disapproval. Not only was it on the bad side of town. But the place looked rundown. He hopped on out and followed. They headed up the rusty staircase but paused as Bella ripped a piece of paper off her door.
“You’re fucking kidding me, right?” He heard her whisper as she unlocked the door.
She entered the apartment, threw her purse down, and picked up the phone. Erik welcomed himself inside. The first thing he noticed was now immaculately clean everything was. But that was all her doing, the apartment itself was a complete dump. It was very small with one bedroom. There was no dining area and the living room connected to the kitchen. Just a few steps and you pretty much had your tour of the place. He couldn’t fathom the idea of raising a child here. No, this just wouldn’t do. This had him thinking back to his upbringing. He wouldn’t wish this on one of his own, or anyone for that matter.
“I just paid you! How can you give me an eviction notice?!”
Erik tilted his head and listened in on her conversation.
“What do you mean that only covers last month’s? I already paid you for last month. Yesterday’s payment was meant to cover this month!”
He took notice of the dripping faucet in the kitchen. Erik turned the handle but it wouldn’t budge. The constant dripping was driving him mad. He waved his hand about and sealed it shut.
“God dammit, Mark! I know damn well what you’re pulling and it’s not going to work!”
On this she slammed down the phone and marched on out of the apartment. She headed to the office and Erik curiously followed. He waited outside but could hear and see everything from where he stood.
“I paid you and you know it!”
“Without a receipt there’s no proof, now is there?!”
“You asshat! You told me you were out of paper.”
“…asshat…?” Erik murmured in wonder.
“There you go talking that crazy talk again.”
The man doubled Bella in size and he had her backed into a corner. He leaned into her ear.
“Look, all you have to do is this one thing. And you’re rent free… I’ll even throw in next month’s as well.”
Erik raised his brows on this.
“We’ve been through this before and already established that isn’t going to happen. Besides, I paid you and you know it.”
“Alright, have it your way. There’s the door. Pack it up or I’m calling the police and I’ll have them personally remove you off the premises.”
“You haven’t any grounds! I mean honestly. What do you think they will say when they find out YOU stole my money and made a sexual advance after?!”
“It’s my word against a stripper’s. So tell me sweetheart, who do you think they’re going to believe?”
“FOR THE LAST TIME, I AM NOT A STRIPPER. I DO THEIR RECORDS, THAT’S IT! YOU FUCKING PRICK!”
The man smiled.
“Body like that… maybe you should reconsider. We both know you could use the money.”
“So that’s the impression I give?”
“Awe now don’t be upset, baby. It’s not your fault. You were born that way.”
Bella nodded and shoved him back. She went on to flip his desk over.
“THE HELL WITH YOU, MARK!”
Just as she went to exit the office, the man grabbed her by the arm and flung her back against the wall. He went to slap her and the door to the office swung open. A letter opener was sent flying directly above his head. It was driven into the wall right behind him. Erik marched on over and he grabbed the man by the collar of his shirt. Bella gasped back as Erik managed to lift the heavy set man off the ground. He looked him dead in the eyes.
“I do not take kindly to everything I just heard. Nor do I appreciate you laying your hands on a woman that just so happens to be carrying my child.”
The man regarded Erik in utter shock.
“You’re to give her not only this month’s but last month’s rent. I will pay to have her belongings moved to my place of residence. If ANYTHING comes up missing, broken, or damaged in anyway; you will be answering to me. Do we have an understanding?!”
“Ye… yes sir!”
“Good. Do not disappoint me.”
Bella gawked upon Erik in disbelief. Mark rushed over and dug through his desk. He retrieved the money and handed it over. Erik exchanged information with him and once they finished going over the procedure, he escorted her on out of the building. He opened the passenger side door and she just stood there with this dazed look about her. She looked to the money in her hand, back to the apartment, then back to Erik.
“I can’t accept this.”
“What other options have you? Is this the future you want for that child?”
She grimaced in thought.
“That’s about what I figured. Let’s go.”
“I’m not a charity case…”
“I’m well aware of that, Isabelle. Now be a dear and get in the car.”
She nodded and climbed on in. Once he was inside, she told him the name and address of her place of work. He said nothing on the matter.
“I thought you were taking me to work.” Bella remarked as he passed the exit.
“I’m taking you home. You’re with child. And with all due respect, a gentleman’s club isn’t quite what I expected. It’s night and day with you, isn’t it?”
She narrowed her eyes on this.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“During the day you attend these rallies and stand up in honor of mutant and human rights. Yet by night you’re entering the doors of this particular establishment. Now whereas I understand your reasoning, others may not and believe me when I say that word around here spread’s fast, whether you do the records or not. It won’t look very good in the public eye. You’ve to consider the cause in which you are fighting for.”
“You don’t seem to understand that I don’t have a whole lot of options.”
“Sure you do. You seem like a smart, capable woman. Use that brain of yours to take things a bit further.”
“And what is that supposed to mean?”
“Get more involved. See how far it takes you.”
“I’m doing that already, but it doesn’t seem to pay the bills. Most of the work I do is volunteer.”
He shook his head on this.
“You don’t seem to grasp what it is I am saying, Miss. Swan.”
“And what is it you’re saying?”
“Put yourself out there! Run for one of the local offices!”
“I’m 18, who’s going to take me seriously? That’s just not an option. And to top it off, I’m pregnant and unwed at that. Amongst other things, that put a bit of a damper on that option.”
“Hm. You don’t seem to realize just how truly inspirational you are. I’ve seen the way others perceive you. They tend to key in on every word.”
She snorted on this.
“Laugh all you want, Isabelle but I wouldn’t waste my breath if I thought any of this to be a joke of sorts. I mean every word I say. So much so that I’m willing to help, whether it be financial, or what have you. Just say the word… And you got it.”
“Proper ID for starters…” she sarcastically threw out there.
Erik narrowed his eyes and cranked his head her direction.
“Did I hear that right?”
She sent him a rather mocking glance.
“If its identification you need… I can get you that.”
“Sure you can…”
Erik cocked a brow on this.
“You just tell me what information you want the public to know and you got it.”
“My room is right across from yours, if you should need anything.”
Bella nodded and looked around the massive room.
“A bit much, don’t you think?”
Erik regarded her in question.
“Nevermind…” she murmured looking rather pasty.
“Are you alright?”
Bella leaned against the wall and nodded.
“Perhaps you should lie down. I will make us something to eat.”
She took a few steps but was quick to cover her mouth. The young woman darted into the bathroom, barely making it in time. Erik wrinkled his nose as he could hear her upchucking. He sat at the edge of the bed and merely waited. Before long, he heard what sounded to be laughter and the flushing of the toilet. He heard the faucet running and could hear her muttering something under her breath. When Bella entered the room, he came to his feet.
“I kind of hate you.”
“And why is that?” He mused with a smirk.
“You got the fun part of the job. You suck!”
“And just what do I suck?” He questioned in a serious mannerism.
This had Bella rolling in laughter.
“Oh Erik… You haven’t the faintest.”
He curled his lip on this. Bella inched her way over and lay down. Within the matter of seconds, she was out.
Bella shot up with a gasp and trolled on out of the bed. She was covered in sweat and feeling her way throughout the darkened room. When she found the doorknob, she turned it then rushed on out the door. She headed straight for the patio, feeling as though she were suffocating. Once she was outside, she staggered back against the iron bars and slid on down, bringing her knees up against her chest. The young woman closed her eyes and started rocking back and forth.
“Is everything alright?”
Bella jumped and snapped her head the direction of the voice. Erik was sitting at the patio table and he nodded her direction.
“Everything’s fine…,” she stated feeling somewhat embarrassed.
She came to a stand and Erik raised his brows as she headed back inside. Bella made her way into the kitchen and gathered a glass. Her hand trembled as she filled it with some water.
“You should eat…” Erik remarked as he entered the kitchen and heard her stomach growling.
“I would’ve awakened you earlier. But figured you hadn’t much of an appetite…”
She gave a simple nod and he watched as she finished her water, placed some dish soap into the glass, washed it, then rinsed, and dried it after. She put the glass back where she got it then sat down at the dining room table.
“Is there something in particular in which you’re craving?”
She lifted her eyes and they met his gaze.
“Haven’t quite got to that part. I’m struggling just in order to keep something down.”
He nodded and looked to be in thought.
“I believe I may have just the thing.”
She regarded him in question as he went and dug through the cabinets. She sort of laughed as a pot popped out from one of them and it landed on the stove.
“So metal… that’s the trick, isn’t it?”
He stopped what he was doing and peered over his shoulder.
“Yeah, you know… your ability. It has to do with metal, doesn’t it?”
“Something like that…”
“I knew a guy that had a metal plate in his head once. He was a real dick… Too bad you weren’t around then.”
Erik rather chuckled on this.
“Obviously… And might I ask when ‘then’ was?”
He reared back on this and Bella smiled.
“And what do you mean by 1998?”
“That was the year in which I met the metalhead.”
Erik stopped what he was doing and made his way over.
“What is it you’re trying to tell me?”
“Would you believe me if I said that my last birthday took place in 2008 and for whatever reason… I ended up in the middle of a Black Sabbath concert here in 1974.”
“Normally, I’d say no. But considering the events that took place in 1973 nothing seems to faze me anymore.”
“Wait… you actually believe me?”
He shrugged and looked to be in thought.
“How long ago was this?”
“Hmmm… I’ve been here for roughly six months, give or take? Hard to keep up.”
He nodded and took a seat beside her.
“And what were you doing when this little time travel event took place?”
Bella thought back to that day and chills ran down her spine. The last thing she truly remembered was cutting her finger and Edward shoving her back, for whatever reason. She hit the mirror behind her and that’s when she felt that ‘pull’. She did her best to describe what had taken place but he looked just as lost as she was. Erik leaned back but had this certain beam about him.
“Does this mean you cheated on your vampire boyfriend? And now you’re carrying another man’s child?! And a mutant’s at that. Tsk, tsk, Isabelle.” Erik teased knowing the relationship was pretty much over, before it even began.
“Out of everything I just told you… that’s what you focus on?”
“So what was this vampire boyfriend of yours like?”
Bella couldn’t believe she was telling Erik these things. Things she swore she’d never reveal. But there was just something about him. She thought back to when he took her virginity. And still… there was that sense of comfort – almost like she’d known Erik all her life. It was crazy, yet there all the same.
“You have no idea…”
“Then why give him two years?”
There wasn’t an ounce of sarcasm to that. Erik couldn’t fathom how it lasted as long as it did. But he frowned once he realized she was only sixteen when this took place, yet the vampire she spoke of was over a century old.
“Let’s just say I’m not sure. Time didn’t make the heart grow founder, so to speak. Perhaps a part of me assumed it would, if I were patient enough. But he found comfort in the way things were and hadn’t any plans of moving on from there. When I mentioned being turned… his way of dealing with the situation was a proposal.”
Erik reared back on this.
“Surely you don’t mean as in marriage?!”
She nodded and he chuckled.
“While in high school?!”
“He wanted to marry over the summer. Those were his conditions… if I was to become his equal. I had to take his name as well.”
“So offering your very soul wasn’t enough?”
Bella couldn’t help but to laugh.
“Edward is very old fashioned. He’s set in his ways and isn’t easily swayed. Let’s just put it this way… He thought turning me was damning my soul, considering he believed vampires hadn’t any.”
“Everyone has a soul… some more corrupt than others. But there all the same.”
The way she said this had him tilting his head.
“I said something along those lines and he simply dismissed it.”
“With all due respect, for someone so old and powerful… He sounds like nothing more than an incompetent child. One that’s used to getting his way and he didn’t like the challenge you represented. Yet he hadn’t the will to let go when needed.”
Her stomach growled once again and Erik hopped to his feet.
“Food. Then we can continue this conversation.”
“Did it suffice?”
“That was like the best meal I’d had in a very long time!”
Erik couldn’t help but to laugh. He found it rather adorable, the way she acted at times.
“I’m so full…,” she groaned and patted her tummy.
Erik nodded. She hadn’t a clue about the test Erik had going. It was merely an idea that popped into his head. He was pleased to see that it was working. Erik had a touch of his magnetic field cast around her. That’s what kept her from getting her usual dose of morning sickness.
“Back to our earlier discussion…”
She narrowed her eyes in question.
“I take it you left more than just a boyfriend and friends behind?”
She nodded with this gloomy presence about her.
“My father… I can’t even imagine what he’s…”
Bella trailed off and swallowed back.
“It’s not something I really wish to discuss.”
He nodded in understanding.
She rose from the table and like that of the glass; she took care of the dishes. Erik just sat there looking completely baffled. After all, it’s not every day you learn that you impregnated a teenage girl from the future.
“You know… You never told me your age or full name.”
“The name is Erik Lensherr and I’m 35 years old.”
The sound of glass breaking had him shooting to his feet.
“…damn…” Bella mumbled as she reached over and grabbed a towel.
Erik grimaced at the cut going across the palm of her hand. Bella looked to the blood and turned snowy white. He rushed over and managed to catch her just in time.
Erik looked over as he had her on the couch and was tending to her hand. He gave a simple nod.
“Wow. You’re like… really old.” She taunted and he shook his head.
“Hey!” She called out as he purposely stuck her with the needle he was using to sew up her hand.
He chuckled and finished up.
“So what was it?”
She narrowed her eyes in question.
“The sight of blood or the age difference?”
“I believe both played a factor.”
He nodded. Bella reached over and ran a single finger along the numbers beneath Erik’s forearm. She shot up in recognition.
“The mark of the holocaust…You’re Jewish.”
Erik didn’t comment. Bella placed her injured hand over the area of her heart.
“24005…” She repeated but as if by memory.
“I’ve seen this many times. The man with no face…,” he heard her whisper.
She thought back to that one night and staggered back.
Erik looked on with concern as she backed herself up against the wall.
“I don’t understand. This… this isn’t’ real. None of this is real!”
Bella grabbed her jacket and headed for the door.
“Do I get some sort of explanation at least?” He called out.
She let out this miserable laugh.
“Even if I had one… I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”
Bella stood in the middle of the field. The very one in which she first arrived. She thought back to the stage, the concert, and the crowd.
“Okay… Whatever this is… STOP!” She called out.
“You hear me dammit?! Wake me up!”
The young woman came to her knees.
“I don’t understand… Why is this happening?” She cried making a first.
She’d yet to deal with her frustrations. And she was beginning to realize that she may never see her father again. Sure, there were others she would miss. But he was the first and last that came to mind. Though she had concerns when it came to her mother, it was nowhere near like that of Charlie. They had a certain bond, one no one could break. But here she was… There was no going back. She thought of the irony. There was a time she longed to be in this day and age. She could never fathom why. But it was strong and it was all she thought about. She never felt so alone. She was beyond frightened. The only thing she could think of was to keep herself distracted. So she thought it best to use her knowledge of the future. And that started with something she and Edward never saw eye to eye on. And that…. was mutant rights. He reacted the same way when it came to the shifters. She always thought it a bit hypocritical in the sense of what he was. What made him so much better? She knew from history itself that this was around the time mutants struggled the most. Bella had a gift for finding beauty in all things whether it be vampire, shifter, or mutant, or mankind. She truly believed that each and everyone of them had a place in this world. If anything, they made life a bit more interesting. She couldn’t imagine a world where only humans existed. The mere thought seemed rather sad and awfully boring. She envied most mutants, even the ones that considered themselves abominations. Sure, Bella knew that some used their abilities for their own selfish gain rather that of the greater good. But then there were the ones that put themselves out there. Bella wanted to be like them, to be different. Normal was so dreadfully boring. She hated this feeling… pathetic and weak. At least that’s the way she saw herself. There was nothing special about her. But she would fight for the ones that were. To someone like Bella… it didn’t matter which side you were on. Both were filled with corruption and often enough it was mankind, rather than mutant. It was mankind that was so quick to strip away the rights of anyone different. This was just another form of segregation and Bella wouldn’t stand for it. She glanced upon her stomach and it was then it truly dawned on her. Perhaps there was a reason behind all this after all…
Bella nodded but didn’t comment as she kept working.
“You do realize the meeting isn’t for another three hours?”
“I’m well aware. Thank you, Bailey.”
“What’s this?” The man asked as she handed him a folder.
“I want that typed out and ready to go.”
The man opened the folder and reared back.
“This is eight pages, front and back.”
“Then you had better get to it…”
“Have you been here all night?”
“You do realize we’re not getting paid for this?!”
“Yep!” She replied as she came to her feet and headed into one of the nearby offices.
“There’s this thing called knocking before entering.”
Bella nodded and took a seat at the man’s desk.
“Is there something in which you need to discuss?”
“I need a job.”
“And you have one…” The man said as he was focused on whatever he was working on.
“Something that pays and well.”
The man stopped what he was doing and lifted his eyes.
“You want me to pay you?”
The man had a good laugh at this.
“And why would I do that?”
Bella handed the man a folder and he sent her a puzzled look.
“Where did you get these?” He questioned after glancing everything over.
“It doesn’t matter… As you can see those are the ratings from during the time I’m on.”
“That they are… But where are you going with this exactly?”
“Don’t you think I should be getting some sort of compensation? You know… considering how you and others are making bank off me.”
“You want me to pay you for spending approximately 5 to 6 hours a week giving fancy little speeches?”
“That’s over 5 hours of preparation each time, one hour cab fare here and one hour back. So that’s 32 hours a week, at least!”
“And if don’t?”
“Then I will happily skip on over to channel 14…”
Bella tossed over a letter.
“And this is?”
“Channel 14’s offer…”
The man read over the letter and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“They want you over there?”
“But they’re only offering you thirty hours pay a week.”
“As to why you’re going to offer me forty and maybe a nice insurance plan? Perhaps an office of my own?”
The man looked to be in thought.
“Look, you need viewers and I need a paycheck. Scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. Otherwise, I’m walking… and you can watch me on channel 14.”
“I’m going to need you to fill out an actual application. I will need a resume and some ID.”
Bella smiled on this.
“You got it.”
“Then I’ll see you first thing Monday morning. Welcome aboard, Miss. Swan.”
(Be a good sport by leaving your comment/review or a simple ‘like’, if you dug the chapter. Sorry it took longer than expected. I’m having to correct the format from my old system when editing and then adding to that WP is being a glitch bitch. Thank you Falling for the amazing manip. And Bertie Bott for the banner/manip. You ladies rock!)
